Rahul: Flout rule, face penalty
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday got a taste of the factionalism in the party in Maharashtra when he addressed the party leaders in Mumbai. According to well-placed sources, some veteran party functionaries publicly demanded the removal of Mohan Prakash as Maharashtra in-charge, while others demanded a decision on the vacant post of the Mumbai Congress chief as early as possible. Eventually, Mr Gandhi asked them to be patient and assured them that he was trying his best to address these issues.
After Mr Gandhi concluded his address, senior party member and vice-president of MRCC Vasant Nanaware vented out against Mr Parakash over his appointment as Maharashtra in-charge. A party functionary who attended the meeting said that Mr Nanaware’s contention was that despite being with the party since the era of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, he was sidelined for the post of Maharashtra in-charge. He went on to add that Mr Prakash, as a former leader of the Janata Dal, used to criticise Indira and Rajiv Gandhi.
After hearing him out, Mr Gandhi is said to have assured him that soon there would be rules in place that would treat all leaders equally. “I am working on a set of rules in which every party leader will get equal rights. Whoever flouts the rule will have to face the same punishment,” he reportedly said.
