Rahul to IYC: Intensify programmes
Apparently unhappy with the performance of the Youth Congress, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is learnt to have directed the organisation to intensify its public programmes in all states, which would be monitored at the central level.
The move to infuse life into the Youth Congress has apparently come in a bid to prepare for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress general secretary is learnt to have been unhappy with the performance of the Youth Congress in the recent state Assembly elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
“Even though the Youth Congress managed record number of new members in the membership drive in Utta Pradesh and Punjab, the election results show uncomfortable picture. Though people are becoming members of the Youth Congress, they appear not taking part in political work in equal number,” said a senior Congress leader.
The party leaders are of the view, that the road ahead for the Congress is difficult in the Hindi belt and there is a growing need to intensify public programmes to connect with the people by taking up their issues effectively. “Even though Mr Gandhi campaigned extensively in UP, the party workers failed to take the message to the people. The Youth Congress is to be seen filling up this gap,” added the Congress functionary.
The Youth Congress will soon be completing its internal elections in most states.
“With internal elections to be completed soon, the party will monitor the work of the elected office bearers, so that course correction, if any, can be done in time,” said the Congress leader.
Though the Congress fielded a large number of leaders from the Youth Congress ranks in the state elections, very few could register a win.
