Railway plans its own power plant
Railways is seeking to become self-reliant in power generation to meet its demands. With the captive power plant in Nabinagar in Bihar of 1,000-MW to become operational soon, the Railways is in talks with the Nuclear Power Corporation to set up a nuclear plant.
The railways is also planning to set up another captive power plant at Adra in West Bengal of 1,320 MW capacity apart from undertaking a number of non-conventional power projects in different parts of the country.
“Railways consumes 3,000 MW of power and we seek to generate 4,000 MW in the next 10 years to become self-reliant. The electrified tracks of the railways carries an average 63 per cent of the passenger and freight traffic even though so far 24,000-km routes out of the total 64,000-km routes of tracks have been electrified,” said Mr Kulbhushan, member (electrical) of the Railway Board.
Mr Kulbhushan informed that the railways is awaiting the coal linkage or the allotment of coal block for the proposed captive power plant at Adra in West Bengal. He said that the Nabinagar power plant would begin generating power from June next year while the plant would become fully operational by March 2015.

Women raid illicit liquor units in UP

In a rare initiative, a group of about 400 women from four villages in Gorakhpur district have raided several illegal distilleries in Tiwaripur area and have destroyed five hundred litres of countrymade liquor to end the menace of hooch.
The death of one Bhagwati Nishad, an elderly person of Bahrampur village in one of the illegal liquor sale outlets, due to alleged thrashing by a youth sparked the protest s and women decided to end the sale of illicit liquor.
“The men in our homes get addicted to illicit liquor that not only destroys their health but also our family life. Time has come for us to move out and destroy the cause of this misery which is the sale of illicit liquor,” said Keerti Kumari, one of the many who participated in the campaign.
The women, joined by various associations and groups, have already destroyed the illegal liquor units in Bahrampur and Basiadeeh villages and are now planning to move to other villages.
The police, meanwhile, has not stopped the women form carrying out their campaign.
