Rain-related incidents claim 34 lives in Tamil Nadu

Thirtyfour persons have died in rain-related incidents over the past few days in Tamil Nadu even as parts of the state continued to receive heavy rains.

Condoling the deaths, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today announced Rs1 lakh as solatium from the Disaster Response Fund to the next of kin of each victim, an official release said.

She also announced a compensation of Rs two lakh from the Chief Minister's relief fund to the relatives of a woman who was killed after she accidentally fell into a open storm-water drain on November 4.

In Chennai, several low-lying areas have been inundated and roads damaged. A century-old post office in the state capital also suffered damage due to the downpour yesterday.

Reservoirs supplying drinking water to Chennai are reaching their maximum level.

With roads being damaged traffic movement was slow leading to traffic snarls in Chennai.

Meanwhile, the Mettur reservoir in Salem district reached 100.1 feet against the full level of 120 feet.

Mettur dam sub-divisional officer N Kumaresan said it was due to heavy discharge of surplus water from Kabini and Krishnarajasager dams in Karnataka.
