Raja sent to Tihar after CBI grilling with Anil
Feb. 17: After facing an intense custodial interrogation for 14 days by the CBI over his role in the 2G spectrum scam, the former telecom minister, Mr A. Raja, now has to cool his heels in the high-security Tihar jail.
Allowing the plea of the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Special Judge, Mr O.P. Saini, said, “The accused (Raja) is remanded in judicial custody till March 3.” Mr Raja was produced before the court on Thursday, after his CBI custody expired.
Earlier, the CBI had questioned Mr Raja and the ADAG chairman, Mr Anil Ambani, together at the agency’s headquarters over the issue of dual technology permit to RCom and its alleged association with Swan Telecom.
However, both remained “non-cooperative” and stuck to their stand, sources privy to the investigations said on Thursday. Soon after the court remanded him to Tihar jail for 14 days, Mr Raja told the reporters outside the Patiala House Courts, “I will prove my innocence.”
On the plea of Mr Ramesh Gupta, his lawyer, the court also directed the Tihar Jail authorities to allow Mr Raja to have access to home-made food in the jail besides providing him his medicines and reading glasses. He would be sharing his ward with former convicted IPS officer, Mr R.K. Sharma.
