Rajasthan couple sell baby for `40,000

A poverty-stricken couple in Rajasthan sold their newly-born baby for just `40,000 as they wanted money for the treatment of their second son who has been ill since birth. The police has arrested five persons in this regard while the investigation is on against six more persons, including a government officer, who allegedly endorsed the registration of papers.
The incident came into light in Sriganganagar when the baby’s mother Sandhya and father Ashok Kumar approached the police saying that the buyer was not paying a due amount of `20,000 as per the contract signed between them. “We have arrested Sandhya, her husband Ashok, Vinod Agarwal and his wife Shakuntla who purchased the baby and one Madhu Nagpal, who was played role of a tout,” said Mr Sharvandas, chief of pol-ice’s anti human trafficking unit in Sriganganagar.
According to the police, a deed had been prepared in the name of adoption [godnama] and was duly stamped by the local registrar office. The police has also named the sub-registrar, a lawyer and witnesses who were part of the proceedings. The sub-registrar told the police that he was not aware of the contents of the deed and mistakenly signed it.
“We have recovered `14,000 while remaining `6,000 were spent on medical expenses when the baby was born. The baby has been united with her mother,” said Mr Sharvandas. “
