Rajasthan minister in nurse row axed

Rajasthan’s controversial water resources minister Mahipal Maderna, suspected to be involved in the mysterious disappearance of nurse Bhanwari Devi, was removed on Sunday by chief minister Ashok Gehlot, who advised the governor to remove him.

Dalit organisations in Jodhpur and elsewhere had been on the warpath demanding his sacking. The chief minister had earlier asked Mr Maderna to resign, but the latter had refused. The CM met him again late Saturday night and told him to step down.
Mr Maderna, who belongs to the politically powerful Jat community, has repeatedly denied all the allegations against him.
