Rao slams Jagan for remark
Senior Congress leader from Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh and Rajya Sabha MP Hanumantha Rao on Sunday came down heavily on former MP Jagan Mohan Reddy for daring to declare that the Congress would be reduced to third position in the state in the next elections.
He also called on the Kiran Kumar Reddy government to use the name of the party rather than the name of Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, the late chief minister, when it comes to implementing welfare schemes.
Mr Hanumantha Rao has also called on the authorities to investigate the source of Jagan’s wealth.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Mr Rao reacted to the interview given by Jagan to an English newspaper in which he had said that the Congress would be pushed to the third slot in the state. He had claimed that his party would be at the top followed by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Mr Rao said, “For the Congress, Jagan is not the main opponent. It is the TDP. He should bear this in mind.” Taking a dig at Jagan, he said, “Jagan is a kid in politics. His assumptions are wrong.” He added that all Congressmen are ashamed of Jagan as he happens to be a former Congressman.
Referring to Jagan’s claim that he will win the byelection to Kadappa by a margin of 10 lakh votes, Mr Rao said, “Even YSR was able to win only by a margin of a few thousand votes. How can Jagan win by such a huge margin?”
Recalling his early days in politics, Mr Rao said, “I convinced everybody to accept YSR as the PCC chief in 1983, much against the wishes of 30 MPs at that time. I have always been loyal to the party. But the son of YSR has gone astray.”
Questioning the source of Jagan’s wealth, the Rajya Sabha MP demanded an inquiry into the source of his wealth. He said, “I have been in politics for 40 years. I don’t have much money. How did Jagan earn so much in just five years? There has to be an inquiry?”
Predicting that Jagan will not make it in politics, Mr Rao said, “Whoever deserted the party is like an orphan. They will get lost in the political wilderness.” Referring to Jagan’s version that the party got only 24 seats in 1994, the senior leader said, “That was the fault of YSR and he himself has accepted it.”
