Rape charges: Rajasthan minister Babu Lal Nagar resigns

Jaipur: A day after he was booked on rape charges, Rajasthan's minister of state for dairy Babu Lal Nagar resigned on Thursday, even as the chief minister was under pressure to initiate action against him. But Nagar said: I have resigned on moral grounds so that impartial probe can be carried out"Babu Lal Nagar was been booked under IPC Sections 376 (rape) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) , following directions from a judicial magistrate in the city, according to the inspector Bhawani Singh Shekhawat of the Sodala police station. The case has been referred to the CID-Crime Branch as it involves an MLA, he said.The minister claimed it was a “political conspiracy” to tarnish his image ahead of the elections and said, “I am ready to face any probe as I know the woman is trying to defame me on the diktat of rival leaders.”In her complaint, the woman said the minister, who she knew, had called her to his official residence on September 11, where she was raped and assaulted. She complained that the minister had threatened her with dire consequences if she lodged a complaint.The minister said, “On September 11, I was busy with people from my constituency from 8 am to 8 pm. My family members were present at my residence. At the specific time (5 pm) mentioned in the complaint, I was with party workers.” He alleged the woman had blackmailed others after lodging similar complaints.
