Rapist marries victim in jail

An undertrial rapist married the victim in the jail, paving the way for his release, officials said today.

Rohitashaw Hembram (28) was arrested on April 21 after the woman alleged that she had been impregnated on false promise of marriage.

Hearing Hembram's bail petition last month, the local court said the bail application could be considered if the accused agreed to marry the complainant.

Hembram agreed to the proposal.

The marriage was solemnised in the presence of Jail Superintendent, S.D. Bhui, Rourkela Bar Association President, Ramesh Bal and the advocates of both parties yesterday.

The lawyer of Hembram said the record of marriage would be produced before the court for his release.
