Rathore pension witheld in full
Former Haryana director-general of police (DGP) S.P.S. Rathore’s pension has been withheld completely on a permanent basis. Rathore, who is serving jail term after being convicted in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case, had earlier been stripped off the police medal awarded to him. A home ministry statement on Wednesday said
that the Centre decided to withhold the pension of Rathore, a retired IPS officer of the 1965 batch, after the Chandigarh chief judicial magistrate convicted him in the molestation case.
Home minister P. Chidambaram, while speaking at the ministry’s monthly press conference, said that the decision to permanently withhold Rathore’s pension was taken after consultations with the Union Public Service Commission.
The home ministry had written to the UPSC and the ministry of personnel, seeking their views on reducing and discontinuation of the pension and other post-retirement benefits being given to Rathore.
Ruchika, a budding tennis player, had committed suicide three years after being molested by Rathore on August 12, 1990. In January 2010, the government had stripped Rathore of his police medal. Rathore was awarded the police medal in 1985 for meritorious service.
