Reach out to minority groups, states urged
In a significant step to reach out to organisations of minorities agitating over the Assam riots across the country, the Centre has asked all state governments, particularly Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Orissa, to “reach out’’ to leaders of such organisations and brief them about the action being taken by the government to address their concerns.
The home ministry letter, sent to chief secretaries and DGPs of all states draws their attention to the agitations happening over the Assam situation in other parts of the country. Minor agitation was witnessed in Karnataka last week even as similar protests were contained in Kerala.
The MHA has said that urgent steps be taken by the state administrations to reach out to leaders of such organisations of minorities and brief them about the action being taken by the Central government as well as the Assam government to control the situation and also apprise them about the prevailing situation in Assam.
A detailed report prepared by the MHA of measures taken by the Central government, including the CBI probe into the Assam riots and the relief and rehabilitation package announced by PM Manmohan Singh during his visit to Assam in July, has also been shared with the state governments.
Further, security agencies termed the violence in Mumbai over the weekend as an “orchestrated’’ agitation where role of some political outfits and leaders from Assam has come under the scanner.
