Report on Muslim youth arrest tabled in UP House
The Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh on Monday tabled the R.D. Nimesh Commission report on the arrest of two Muslim youth on terror charges following serial bomb blasts in the Faizabad, Barabanki and Lucknow courts.
The report was tabled at a time when the House was in disorder. The commission in its 237-page report has raised doubts over the claims of the special task force (STF) regarding the arrests of Tariq Qasmi and Khalid Mujahid from Barabanki in the blasts case.
Khalid Mujahid died in May this year while he was being brought back from a court hearing and his family alleged foul play in his death.
Khalid Mujahid’s uncle Zaheer Alam later lodged an FIR against 42 persons, including a retired top Uttar Pradesh police officer and a senior serving cop, for alleged conspiracy in connection with the death of Khalid Mujahid even as the state government recommended a CBI inquiry into the incident. All the 42 persons were booked under Sections 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 302 (murder) of the IPC though their individual roles in the FIR was not clear.
The Nimesh Commission report recommends strong action against officials and staff that played an active role in the arrests.
It has concluded that the involvement of Qasmi and Mujahid in the blasts, for which they were arrested on December 22, 2007, appeared “suspicious”.
The commission also stated that since the matter was pending in the Barabanki district court, it was not possible to fix responsibility on any individual at this stage.
The commission was set up by the then Mayawati government on March 14, 2008, following a hue and cry over the arrest of the two suspects in connection with the blasts.
It had submitted its report to the UP government in August last year. Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had said that it would be tabled in the Assembly.
