Results not out, but admissions over

More than 11,000 students who appeared for the Class 12 exams under the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) board are in trouble, with the University of Mumbai deciding to close admissions to degree colleges from June 7.

While students say their results are not yet out and hence won’t get a seat, University officials say there is no paucity of seats and these students can take admission even after the official date is past. However, the students are afraid they will have to shell out enormous ‘donations’ for seats in reputed colleges.

The NIOS board is like any other education board in the country. But under it, students weak in certain subjects can sit for the board exams and clear Class 10 and 12 boards.

Forum for Fairness in Education president Jayant Jain has also said the parents had approached him and requested FFE to intervene on their behalf.

When asked, Dr Naresh Chandra, pro vice-chancellor, MU said the University cannot do anything for the NIOS students as colleges had to reopen by June 11.

“There are many excess seats and they won’t face any problem in getting admission even after the dates are over,” he said.
