Retd. teacher, 68, murdered in Vasant Kunj

The brutally battered body of a retired teacher was found at his south Delhi residence on Sunday morning. The deceased, identified as Devender Kishore Joshi, 68, was staying alone on the ground floor of C-9/9566, DDA Flats, Vasant Kunj. His body was found in his bedroom by a relative, who alerted the police control room at around 8.15 am. His throat had been slit and his head smashed. Joshi was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police sources said a sharp weapon was used in the crime and the deceased’s head was hit with a blunt object.
It is not clear when the incident took place but the police said the assailants had gained entry and exited through a back door. No ransacking has been reported, though some cash is suspected to be missing and the motive behind the murder seems to be personal enmity.
Police sources said the role of some youth, who were staying on the top floor and were evacuated by the flat owner after Mr Joshi complained to him that his credit card was allegedly stolen by them, is under scanner and a police team is trying to track them.
“The youth were on good terms with Mr Joshi initially when they started living there. However, one of them allegedly stole Mr Joshi’s credit card and did some shopping by using it. Mr Joshi had complained about it to the owner of the flat and he had asked the youth to evacuate the flat few months back,” a senior police official said.
The police said that two of the accused youth had come to meet Joshi after vacating their flat recently.
“We are suspecting their involvement in the murder,” the official said. During investigations, it has been revealed that the deceased was not responding to repeated phone calls made by his relatives and son from the last two days.
“Mr Joshi’s part-time domestic help and the garbage man of the society told us that he was not responding to knocks and calls since the last two days. They were under the impression that he had gone out of the city,” the police official said.
The police has registered a case of murder at the Vasant Kunj (south) police station and further investigation is on in the case.
The deceased, whose wife had passed away few years ago, is survived by his son, Pankaj Joshi, who works as a software engineer in the US.
The police has informed him about the demise of his father and he is on the way to Delhi.
