Rethink over blogging ‘gag’
The Centre on Monday appeared open to removing controversial rules under the Information Technology Act 2008 that sought to police blogs within the country. These draft rules have come under strong criticism from the online community, the media and legal experts as they are perceived as an attempt to gag bloggers’ freedom of speech.
Under the draft rules, besides telecom and Internet service providers, blogs and bloggers are also defined as intermediaries for the first time. This, legal experts say, would mean that before posting a blog, a person would have to ensure that his/her post complies with a very long list of do’s and don’ts — killing the very spirit of blogging. This is not how blogosphere works.
