Rizwan: Court orders Todis be charged
A fast-track court in Kolkata on Thursday ordered to frame industrialist Ashok Todi, his brother Pradip, their relative Anil Saraogi and their middleman Syed Mohiuddin, alias Pappu, for trial on abetment to suicide, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy charges for allegedly driving computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rehman to end his life.
On September 21, 2007, Rizwanur, a resident of Tiljala, was found dead on railway tracks at Patipukur following his marriage with Priyanka, daughter of Ashok Todi, on August 18. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concluded in its probe that it was a case of suicide and thereby booked the Todis on similar charges.
Ninth fast-track judge at the city sessions court Amit Chattopadhyay, however, relieved the three police officers — former deputy commissioner of police of the detective department (DD) Ajoy Kumar, ex-assistant commissioner of police Sukanti Chakraborty and sub-inspector Krishnendu Das of the anti-rowdy section of the DD — from being tried on abetment to suicide charges under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), citing a Supreme Court notice, said CBI counsel Partha Tapaswi. In its chargesheet, the CBI had booked them on charges of abetment to suicide besides criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.
Mr Tapaswi added, “The court directed of trying them under charges of criminal intimidation under section 506 and criminal conspiracy under Section 120B of the IPC. The trial will commence from May 16 and will continue for three days.”
