RJD appeals to EC on symbol
Claiming that the party symbol lantern is safe, the RJD leaders on Friday petitioned the EC to be given time till re-election in Jharkhand before any decision is taken on the issue of de-recognition its national status.
Senior RJD leaders Prem Chand Gupta and Ramdeo Bhandari met the EC officials on Friday. They later claimed that they have been assured by the EC officials that “there is no threat to the party’s election symbol lantern”. “The EC has assured us that there will be no change in our election symbol. The RJD was allotted this symbol even before the party was given the status of a national party,” Mr Gupta told reporters after his meeting with the EC.
The two RJD leaders also requested the EC not to withdraw party’s national status immediately. “We requested the officials that we should be given time as a re-election is likely to take place soon in Jharkhand after which we will be able to fulfil the criteria by getting more than six per cent votes,” Mr Gupta said. The RJD had earlier submitted a written reply to the EC on the issue.
The RJD had failed to bag the mandatory minimum six per cent votes in the Jharkhand Assembly election, after which the EC had served a notice to party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, asking him why the national party status, given to his party, should not be withdrawn.
