Road Safety Council takes steps to remove flex boards at 3 junctions
Kochi: The district Road Safety Council has directed concerned agencies to remove flex and billboard ads at three busy junctions in the wake of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) complaining about the materials obstructing the view resulting in a rise in accidents.
“We have directed the Kochi Corporation, Kalamassery municipality and other local bodies to remove all big ad boards along major roads for which they have allotted permission. We are also removing the ad boards at three busy junctions – Edapally, Palarivattom and Vytilla, along the National Highway on a war-footing,” Regional Transport Officer, Ernakulam, B.J. Antony said.
Earlier the NHAI had pointed out that big and attention seeking ads were placed at vantage points in busy junctions like Vytilla.
Though no deadline has been given for removing the ads on the other roads, those placed at the three junctions would be removed in two weeks time. Earlier, the Council had decided to install blinkers near Zebra crossings along the NH stretch after a study revealed that in the first quarter, over half the fatalities in accidents occurred at such points.
