Row over ranks may hit eamcet

Hyderabad: A fresh controversy is brewing over Eamcet-2013 ranks released on June 5. Students and parents are demanding re ranking of students as further developments on the marks front have been ignored even though the first phase of counselling is yet to begin. This may cost them seats in top colleges.

This year, officials had released Eamcet ranks without waiting for the results of the advanced supplementary exams, improvement exams and revaluation/ reverification. If the marks in these exams are not taken into consideration, thousands of students will miss a slot in the first phase of Eamcet counselling for admission to engineering, medical and pharmacy colleges.

Eamcet ranks are determined by giving 25 per cent weightage for Intermediate marks. But officials released the ranks based on the marks obtained in the March exams. Students who took the supplementary exams were to be ranked separately and allowed to take part from the second phase of counselling.

The idea, then, was not to delay the first phase of Eamcet counselling, which was scheduled to begin on June 17, and ensure that classes for the first year students begin on August 1. However, the government’s delay in fixing the fee sent the schedule for a toss.

While the first phase of Eamcet counselling, which was scheduled to begin on June 17, got delayed, around 2 lakh Inter students appeared for Inter advanced supplementary exams and applied for revaluation/reverification of answer scripts. Their results were announced on June 21, and thousands of students improved their score.

Despite this, they will not be able to take part in the first phase of counselling as the officials have decided to allow them only from the second phase. Each extra mark in the Inter exam will make a lot of difference for students with their Eamcet ranks climbing up by hundreds.

“Why should they be denied a chance to take part in first phase of counselling? There is still time to take the results of Inter supplementary into consideration and re-release the ranks,” said Madhusudhan Reddy, general secretary, AP Government Junior Lecturers’ Association.

Students are tense over losing seats in their preferred courses and colleges, which will be filled in the first phase of counselling.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
