Rs 1 lakh each for victims’ kin
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday expressed their grief over the loss of lives and property in the flash floods in Leh in Jammu and Kashmir. Dr Singh also announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.
In a statement the PMO said, “The Prime Minister is grieved to learn about the loss of life and property in the flash floods which hit Leh after a cloud burst on Thursday night.”
The statement further added that Dr Singh announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 each to the seriously injured from the PM’s National Relief Fund.
In statement issued by the AICC media department, Mrs Gandhi expressed her deep sorrow and grief over the loss of life due to flash floods in Leh. She also wished speedy recovery to all those injured, it added.
Flash floods struck Leh on Thursday night killing 59 people. A defence ministry spokesperson said the PM had asked the ministry to ensure prompt assistance to the Leh cloudburst victims. defence minister A.K. Antony is monitoring the operations, he added.

Save those under debris, urges Omar

Aug. 6: Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah flew into Leh on his official helicopter on Friday and extensively toured the city for a first-hand appraisal of the destruction caused by rain-driven flash floods and mudslides.
He also reviewed rescue and relief operation measures being jointly carried out by the Army, police and district administration. He directed the Leh administration to be at the beck and call of the people.
Mr Abdullah said the focus should be on rescuing those who are expected to be alive under the debris. Later, he chaired a meeting of the district administration at which Mr Jora, chief executive councillor of the Autonomous Hill Development Council of Leh; the GOC, 14th Corps; the Leh deputy commissioner and other senior officers were present. The CM said supplies and healthcare facilities for the people be ensured and asked the administration to gear up all units to meet the situation.
