Rs 10K cr to upgrade Sukhois
The government is considering a proposal to upgrade its current Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft fleet at a cost of over Rs 10,000 crore. This follows another proposal, reported earlier, for acquisition of 42 more Sukhoi aircraft at a cost of over Rs 20,000 crore.
“There is a proposal to upgrade the SU-30 MKI aircraft of the Indian Air Force by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) with the support of the Russian Original Equipment Manufacturer. The current estimated cost is Rs 10,920 crores and the aircraft are likely to be upgraded in a phased manner from year 2012 onwards,” defence minister A.K. Antony informed Parliament on Wednesday.
The Sukhoi fighters are currently being manufactured under license from Russia by the Bengaluru-based HAL.
The government also informed Parliament that there have been 59 cases of suicide so far in the armed forces this year till July.
There were 111 cases of suicide by armed forces personnel last year.
