RS, Council polls: Sonia meets AICC officials
Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday held consultations with the AICC general secretaries and the state party officials about the elections to the Rajya Sabha and the Legislative Councils.
As per the practice, the candidates are announced a day or two before the last date of filing of the nominations, an AICC official said. The Rajya Sabha and Legislative Councils elections in several states scheduled next month.
“Discussion on names of the party candidates have been held. They will be announced shortly,” a senior leader said, indicating that it could be in the first week of the next month.
The term of office of 55 members of the Rajya Sabha in 13 states is due to expire in June and July.
Hectic lobbying is on by leaders from several states for the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council nominations and in Maharashtra alone, there have been 24 applications for two seats of the Rajya Sabha which the party is sure to win.
Similarly, there have been 129 applications for four of the ten seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council which the Congress is expected to win.
The Congress chief ministers in different states, PCC chiefs have already given their assessment to the party high command about candidates and the electoral prospects.
