Russian minor rape accused dead?
The probe into the rape of a Russian minor in 2010 has hit a roadblock amid reports that the prime accused died at his native village in Uttar Pradesh, Goa police said today.
Deputy superintendent of police Sammy Tavares, however, clarified there was no formal information about death of the 20-year-old Aman Bharadwaj. Aman was being tried in Panaji bench of the Bombay high court for allegedly raping the nine-year-old Russian girl on January 26, 2010 at Arambol beach here.
According to media reports quoting Uttar Pradesh police, Aman died soon after Diwali at his village Kasaila under Nagar police station.
While Uttar Pradesh police claimed that Aman killed himself, his family members stated that he died of jaundice.

Lottery king daughter in suicide bid

Lottery king Santiago Martin’s college-going daughter on Sunday attempted suicide by consuming pain-killer tablets, allegedly depressed over the detention of her father under the Goondas Act. Her condition is stable and she is out of danger, doctors of Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital, where she is being treated, said.
The police said Daisy (20), a student of PSG College of Arts and Science, had attempted suicide by consuming a lot of paracetamol tablets at her house in Thudiyalur.

Stranded tourists leave lakshadweep
Kalpeni (Lakshadweep), Oct. 30: As many as 130 tourists, who were stranded here on Saturday without food and water after some locals prevented them from boarding a passenger vessel, left the place on Sunday following police intervention. The tourists, most of them from Gujarat, reached Minicoy island on board a ship with police escort. The group that included 26 children had reached here from Kavaratti, the headquarters island of Lakshadweep on Saturday and were about to board a boat to take them to the passenger vessel MV Kavaratti when about 300 locals stopped them saying they did not have valid tickets.
Their ordeal ended after Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi called up home minister P. Chidambaram asking him to intervene in the matter. — PTI

K. Durga Prasad likely to be next spg chief

Andhra Pradesh cadre IPS officer K. Durga Prasad is likely to be the next head of the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) taking over from B.V. Wanchoo, who retires on Monday.
According to sources, after his selection, Mr Prasad will be empanelled in the rank of additional director-general. Mr Prasad, a 1981-batch IPS officer, who is at present posted as additional director-general of police (sports) in AP, was among the two officers interviewed for the post and it is understood that the government has cleared his name to head the SPG, sources added. The SPG was primarily created to guard the Prime Minister and their immediate family. Besides the PM, the SPG also guards Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and her two children, Rahul and Priyanka.
