Sachan’s family refuses to cremate him, demands CBI probe

The Sachan death case took a new turn today with the family of the top medical officer refusing to cremate him, demanding a CBI probe which was rejected by the Mayawati government.

After the post mortem revealed that there were nine injuries on the body of deputy chief medical officer Y.S. Sachan, his family dismissed the suicide theory projected by the police and demanded that a case of murder be lodged and a CBI inquiry ordered.

“There is no need for the CBI probe. This has been informed to you (media) on Thursday also by the Cabinet secretary”, principal secretary, home, Kunwar Fateh Bahadur told reporters here when asked about it.

52-year-old Sachan was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the toilet of the Lucknow jail hospital.

In the autopsy, injury marks were detected on the neck, elbows, thigh and left wrist besides a strangulation mark on the neck.

“The postmortem report clearly indicates that it's a clear-cut case of murder,” Sachan’s brother R.K. Sachan said while pressing for a CBI probe in the case.

He said excessive bleeding has been mentioned as the cause of death in the autopsy report which indicates murder.

“Hanging cannot be caused by a belt. A doctor cannot inflict so many injuries on his own body as slitting one vein is sufficient to cause death,” he said.

“It is clear that first he was killed and later his body was dragged to the first floor and the incident was made to look as suicide,” he said.

When asked about Sachan’s cremation, his brother said this will be done only after a CBI probe is instituted.

Earlier, an application by Sachan’s wife Malti was sent to principal secretary home and DIG Lucknow demanding that an Fir be lodged and the case be investigated thoroughly.

Sachan was named the main accused in the murder of chief medical officer (family welfare) B.P. Singh who was shot dead by unidentified persons on April 2 while on a morning walk.

Sachan was arrested after Singh's murder when the investigating agencies detected swindling of funds to the tune of several crore of rupees in the implementation of the National Rural Health Mission in Uttar Pradesh.

Cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh stated that a sharp blade, which Sachan probably used to slit his veins, was recovered from the spot and has been taken as evidence.

When asked how Sachan reached the first floor of the bathroom to hang himself after cutting his veins on the wrist, neck, elbows and thigh, Singh merely said that a judicial probe was underway.

“Prima facie it's a case of suicide, but as judicial inquiry is being conducted into the incidents the facts will come out soon. As the judicial inquiry has already started it is not appropriate to reach any conclusion,” he said.
