Sadhu upset over Cong Bihar list, quits
Muslims figured prominently in the first list of Congress candidates for the six-phase Bihar Assembly elections beginning on October 21. While the party released the list of 77 candidates late on Monday night, the NCP and the CPI(ML) also released the list of 48 candidates on Tuesday.
But the Congress list angered Sadhu Yadav, who announced his resignation from the party’s election campaign committee, alleging that candidates with mass support were ignored. “I am really pained and hurt at the way the list of 77 candidates of the party has been released in New Delhi without holding consultations with senior leaders... It has virtually ignored the claims of the genuine leaders of mass support in Congress in Bihar,” he said in Patna.
“I am also free to take the future course of action... but I will highlight the issue of irregularities and politics which has led to denial of tickets to genuine workers, while continuing in the party,” he said.
Mr Sadhu Yadav, the brother of Ms Rabri Devi, had revolted against RJD chief Lalu Yadav in the last Lok Sabha election and joined the Congress. Now, he is complaining his supporters were ignored in allotment of tickets in the first list but some MPs from “outside” had prominent say in the list.
The Congress has fielded over 20 candidates from the Muslim community and prominent among them is Bihar PCC president Mehboob Ali Kaiser. Besides, Congress Legislature Party leader Ashok Ram also figured in it.
While Mr Kaiser, who was appointed the PCC chief a few months back, will be contesting from Simri Bakhtiarpur segment, Mr Ram will fight from Kusheshwar Asthan seat. But the party has decided not to project a leader against Mr Nitish Kumar and Mr Lalu Yadav.
Both Mr Kumar and Mr Yadav have been declared as the chief ministerial candidates by their parties.
The Congress is putting up candidates for all the 243 seats in the state where the JD(U)-BJP and the RJD-LJP are its main opponents.
Ms Lovely Anand, wife of former MP Anand Mohan, has been given the Congress nomination from Alamnagar constituency. Leader of the party in the Legislative Council Mahachandra Prasad Singh will be the candidate from Sahebganj.
Another prominent name in the list is Asif Gafur, grandson of former chief minister Abdul Gafoor from Barauli.
