Sanctuary for sloth bears in Rajasthan
The Rajasthan government has ear marked 4,468 sq-km land, located between Jalore and Sirohi districts, for a sloth bear sanctuary. It will be the first sanctuary for bears.
According to forest department, the Central government has given its nod to the project. “We found an ideal location for bear in Jaswantpura area of Shundhamata,” says a forest official. The forest authorities sighted 300 sloth bears in recently-held wild life census.
The decision was taken after when the forest authorities noticed the smuggling of sloth bears to Nepal from the state. Sloth bears are in demand in China. The forest department also decided to fit radio collar to ensure the protection. Genrally, sloth bears Rae noticed roaming freely in thick forest of Udaipur, Kota, Baran, Karauli and Swai Madhopur, but Shundhamata forests in Jalore and Sirohi districts were taken as most suitable for the sanctuary.

Tigress shifted to Sariska

July 28: A tigress has been airlifted from Ranthambhor Sanctuary to Sariska in Alwar on Wednesday amid tight security. Tigress T44 was tranquillised on Wednesday morning and taken to Sariska by an air force helicopter. “The first phase of the relocation of the big cat has been completed most successfully,” says a forest officer.
The two-and-half-year old tigress T44 will join the family of four big cats.
