Sankranti helps clear Hyderabad's air
Hyderabad: Perhaps an unintended consequence of the Sankranti festival earlier this week is that the ambient air quality in the city improved as lakhs of people left the city for their native places, especially those from Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Measurements for ambient air quality taken by the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board reveal that all the parameters, including for respirable suspended particulate matter and total suspended particulate matter, sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, came down drastically during the three-day festival.
As a large chunk of the city’s population comprises affluent car-owning migrants, their exit from the city to visit relatives and friends resulted in the decline in air pollution levels.
The only exception was Jeedimetla that sees more trucks arriving during the festival.
Paradise, Punjagutta, Charminar, Jubilee Hills, Bala Nagar, Uppal and even sensitive areas like Zoo Park and KBR Park experienced clearer air.
