Satellite to watch over temple
The Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple, in the limelight after a treasure exceeding Rs1 lakh crore was recovered from its secret cellars, was put under satellite surveillance on Sunday.
“The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy recently,” sources involved in the treasure hunt said, adding that this had been officially communicated to the Centre.
“As you know, the treasure is enormous. We couldn’t have delayed implementing the decision,” the sources said.
They said the administration sought the assistance of Indian Space Research Organisation for the purpose.
India has a constellation of satellites that can take crystal clear pictures of even the remotest of locations. “Now that it [the satellite] is up and running, it’ll cover every nook and cranny of the temple,” the sources said.
They said even activities taking place inside the sanctum sanctorum were under surveillance. “So, there’s absolutely nothing to worry about the safety of the treasure.”
Director general of police Jacob Punnoose, however, refused to comment on the development citing security reasons. “I will neither deny nor confirm this since it’s a very sensitive issue,” he said.
