SC admits petitions on plastic ban
The Supreme Court on Monday admitted a bunch of petitions challenging the complete ban imposed on use of plastic bags by the Delhi government.
“Since legislative competence has been questioned, we are admitting the petitions,” a bench comprising Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia and Justice Swatanter Kumar said. Some plastic bag manufacturers and traders have alleged that the notification banning the use of plastic carry bags was issued without properly following the procedure.
The January 7, 2009, notification bans the use of plastic bags in shopping malls, five-star hotels, restaurants, dairies and fruits and vegetable outlets under the Environment Protection Act. The petitioners contended that before issuing the notification, the Delhi government should have published the draft proposal to inform the public for eliciting objections to the proposed ban.

SC notice to Maha on Pragya plea
New Delhi, Aug. 30: Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, prime accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blasts case, on Monday sought bail from the Supreme Court alleging that she was kept in illegal custody by the Maharashtra police after her arrest.
A bench comprising Justices J.M. Panchal and Gyan Sudha Mishra sought response within four weeks from Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) which had arrested Thakur and later booked her under the stringent MCOCA.
The bench issued notice to the prosecution after advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, appearing for Thakur, alleged that she was kept in 14 days “illegal” custody before being produced in a trial court on October 23, 2008.
He submitted that the ATS on October 7 had asked her to go from Jabalpur and meet its officers in Surat where she was taken into illegal custody on October 10. —PTI
