SC directs farmers to petition HC
The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain a writ petition of eight farmers from Bhatta, Parsaul and Acheypur villages, the scene of recent alleged atrocities of the Uttar Pradesh police on the issue of acquiring their land and asked them to approach the Allahabad high court.
However, the farmers led by Satish Kumar in the sworn affidavits stated that two farmers had lost their lives in the violence that took place on May 7, virtually discounting all the theories of higher causalities as alleged by the leaders of some political parties opposed to the Mayawati government.
The farmers, who joined Satish Kumar to seek the apex court’s direction for CBI probe into the entire episode, included Kritpal Singh, Patar Ram, Satyapal Singh, Harshwardhan and three women; Omwati, Mahadai and Rani,
A bench of Justices G.S. Singhvi and C.K. Prasad while declining their plea told their counsel Udai Lalit that it would not be appropriate for the top court to intervene.
