SC justifies quashing TDP case
In a major relief to the Opposition Telugu Desam Party, the Supreme Court on Tuesday justified the quashing of a case against its government in Andhra Pradesh, registered by the Anti-Corruption Bureau in 2003.
The complaint was registered by the then Andhra Pradesh Congress Legal Cell chief Naguluri Krishna Kumar Gaud and a special court, hearing ACB cases had ordered investigation.
In the complaint Mr Gaud had accused the then chief minister Chandra Babu Naidu, his excise minister T. Nageswhar Rao and 69 others of allegedly committing “irregularities” in allotment of liquor licences under the state’s excise policy and causing losses of several crore rupees to the state.
The ACB court had mainly ordered investigation against Mr Gaud, beverage corporation MD Virbhadraiah and some other accused persons, which they challenged in the Andhra Pradesh high court, which had struck down the complaint, admitting the arguments by TDP counsel that the case was “politically motivated”.
