SC notice to Raju on bail cancellation

New Delhi, Oct. 1: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused in the Satyam scam, on the CBI’s plea that his bail be cancelled since it was affecting the entire case.

“Since he is accused No-1, and was actively involved in the criminal conspiracy, liberty to him at this stage of the trial would result in miscarriage of the justice,” pointed out the CBI in its petition.

Raju was granted bail by the Andhra Pradesh High Court on August 18 on health grounds but the solicitor-general, Mr Gopal Subramaniam, said that he had been offered the best medical facilities in jail and was even permitted treatment outside while in custody.

A bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma then directed Raju to submit his reply by October 19, when the CBI petitions for cancelling the bail of other co-accused would also be taken up.

The CBI petition contended that the HC erred in granting him bail on the ground that the others in the case had also been granted bail.

According to the CBI, Raju cannot be compared with the other accused in the case since the role he played in the conspiracy was very serious.
