SC rejects Pillai’s review petition
The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the review petition of former Kerala minister R. Balakrishnan Pillai in a corruption case related to the awarding of a channel construction contract in Idamalayar hydro project in 1982, saying there was no merit in his plea for “recalling” of the verdict.
The top court in its verdict of February 10 had upheld the conviction of Pillai and two other co-accused P.K. Sajeev and Ramabhadran Nair in the decades-old case and sentenced each of them to one-year rigorous imprisonment.
A bench of Justices Sathasivam and B.S. Chauhan, which passed the original verdict, while dismissing the review petition also rejected the applications for bail and stay of the apex court verdict, filed by Pillai and Sajeev.
“Applications for oral submissions (review), bail, stay and recalling for the judgment of dated February 10, 2011 are rejected,” the top court said adding “we have carefully gone through the review petitions and the connected papers. We find no merit in the review petitions and the same are accordingly rejected.”
However, the review petition of Nair was put up for open court hearing on Thursday as his counsel said that he was seriously ill and could not be sent to jail to serve his sentence in his “present state” of physical condition.
