UP to scrap Kanshi Ram projects
Former UP chief minister Mayawati’s two dream projects — the Kanshi Ram Dalit Samagra Vikas Yojana and the Kanshi Ram Nagar Vikas Yojana — are being shut down by the Akhilesh Yadav government.
“Both the schemes were found to be floundering in terms of implementation and we have decided to close them down for the time being. The schemes will later be reinvented and launched under a new name,” disclosed a senior official of the urban development ministry that is headed by senior SP minister Azam Khan.
The Kanshi Ram Dalit Samagra Vikas Yojana was aimed at integrated development of dalit-dominated villages while the Kanshi Ram Nagar Vikas Yojana was aimed at providing low cost housing facilities to those living below the poverty line in urban areas.
“More than `2,000 crores was set aside for these schemes but the results show that the money was not properly utilised here. We will make an assessment of the money spent under these schemes and then evolve a better scheme,” the official said.
The urban development ministry has already started winding up payments for the work undertaken and accomplished and inquiries are being ordered in cases where there are complaints.
Another Mayawati project that is being wrapped up is the Savitri Bai Phule Balika Shiksha Madad Yojana and will be replaced by the Kanya Vidya Dhan Yojana that had been started by the Mulayam Singh government in 2006.
