‘SC/STs will teach govt a lesson’

On seeking a special session, BSP chief Mayawati said, “We will write to the Prime Minister for a special session. We will give them one or two more chances. We will raise the issue again in the Budget Session. If they continue this drama, then the elections will come in 2014, the SC/ST community will teach them a lesson.”
The House witnessed high drama right from the time the bill titled Constitution (117th Amendment) Bill, 2012 was moved by personnel minister V. Narayanasamy for consideration. He spoke extempore as SP member Yashvir Singh snatched the copy he had on Wednesday.
When Congress leader P.L. Punia began to speak. At this point SP members trooped into the well of the House raising slogans against the bill. Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani stood up to speak amidst the uproar but was disallowed.
When the House re-assembled the BJP members too rushed into the well of the House shouting, “Patipaksh ka aisa apmaan, nahi chalega (insult of the Opposition will not be tolerated).”
Congress MPs countered the Opposition standing in the aisle and started shouting slogans in support of the proposed legislation.
In between the adjournments, parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath, IT Minister Kapil Sibal, Girija Vyas were found talking to SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav who appeared in no mood to give in. BJP members too requested Mr Yadav to rein in his party members to enable Mr Advani to speak. As the request fell only on deaf ears Ananth Kumar was heard telling Mr Yadav that he too would not be allowed to speak the next time.
As the pandemonium continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 pm. As similar scenes were witnessed, deputy speaker Karia Munda adjourned again till 2:30 pm. Then chair was forced to adjourn the house till 4 pm. With bedlam prevailing, it was again adjourned till 5:30 pm during which attempts were made to bring about a consensus over the bill but to no avail. At 5:30 pm Speaker Mrs Kumar adjou-rned the House sine die.
