An inebriated man killed his sister’s pet dog early on Sunday morning in Chennai, apparently as he was not served food immediately when he asked for it after reaching home.

S. Pushpanathan, a 40-year-old lorry driver, had allegedly kicked and chocked the dog to death by stamping on the animal’s neck.

Police has registered a case of cruelty for the killing of the Pomeranian against Pushpanathan, in Tambaram, but he is absconding.

Pushpanathan had come home in an intoxicated state well past midnight and demanded that his sister Mohanapriya serve him food. The girl, an MBA student, was preparing for an examination on Sunday and was cuddling her pet dog Lara who was gifted to her in July by another brother who had since passed away.

“I was very close to Lara because my brother gifted it. We kept it in his memory,” Mohanapriya told Deccan Chronicle on Sunday.

Pushpanathan was angry because he was not immediately attended to. “He tried to snatch the dog from me first. Then he quarreled with my other brother, Jayaperumal, and left,” Mohanapriya said.

“He returned at 2 am and started fighting with me again. He dragged the dog, started kicking it and later stamped on it with his leg,” she said.

Mohanapriya said that she could not do well in the examination because of the incident.

The family informed the Blue Cross and the Chromepet police about the incident. The Blue Cross volunteers took the body of the dog to veterinary hospital for post mortem while Jayperumal, who runs a hardware store, lodged a complaint with the police.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
