Seers raise Modi chant
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s “dharma sansad” and “sant sammelan” here Thursday queered the pitch for the BJP by raising the demand for Gujarat CM Narendra Modi as PM candidate.
There was more politics than religion here. While the VHP and RSS tried to revive the Ram temple issue and downplay the Modi factor, both failed to convince the saints.
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said, without mentioning Mr Modi’s name, that the name taken by everyone was also known to all, but it was not his job to take a decision. “Those who have to take the decision should understand the sentiment. The Sangh wants a society that is aware and can protect Hindutva,” he said.
Mr Bhagwat added the Ram temple was the priority. The RSS made it clear it wants an unambiguous return to Hindutva. “Why do we have to plead for a Ram temple? This is for re-establishing Indian identity.”
VHP leader Ashok Singhal also kept his focus on the temple issue, and said saints and seers should start a campaign from April 13 to raise “spiritual strength” for temple construction.
Earlier, despite VHP requests not to talk politics, many saints, including Sri Vasudevanand Saraswati, Sri Ramanujacharya, Sri Ram Bhadracharya and Swami Vishwawesharananad and the VHP’s Giriraj Kishore insisted on raising the demand for Mr Modi as PM candidate. They also emphasised Mr Modi was essential to clear all hurdles in the path of temple construction. “Ram Mandir ke liye bhi Modi chahiye,” was the refrain.
“UPA nahin, NDA nahin... sirf Narendra Modi chahiye”, said Sri Ramanujacharya, to thunderous applause from saints. The “dharma sansad” sent a clear signal that it would not accept anyone except Mr Modi as the BJP’s PM candidate.
