Sena clears out of Shivaji Park
Though the Shiv Sena removed the makeshift structure, it finally had its say on the memorial to late party chief Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park. The party managed to convince the civic administration as well as Opposition parties to set up a small garden in memory of the Sena supremo at the same site.
The Sena’s proposal to build a landscaped garden of 40 x 20 sq. ft, which will also have an earthen platform, was unanimously approved in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation group leaders meeting on Tuesday. The proposal has been sent to the municipal commissioner for his remarks.
The proposal involves construction of a garden between the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Shivaji Park Nagrik Sangh building next to the well and the banyan tree at Shivaji Park. An earthen platform will be set up in the garden to enable people to pay homage. “No construction will come up at Shivaji Park. Additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani will check the legal and technical aspects by visiting the site before taking a final decision on this proposal,” said municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte. Civic officials said construction and noise pollution are prohibited at Shivaji Park as per high court orders.
