Sena firm on opposition to Jaitapur N-project: Uddhav

Shiv Sena will extend all possible help to locals to oppose the proposed nuclear power project at Jaitapur, party executive president Uddhav Thackeray said on Saturday.

"Shiv Sena will be behind you with all its might to see that the project does not come up," Uddhav said, addressing a public rally at Mithgavhane to express solidarity with the protesting villagers.

"After the tsunami in Japan, there was massive radiation and extensive damage there. Do not try such an experiment on the hapless people of Konkan," Uddhav said.

Thackeray was accompanied by senior leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi and several Sena MPs and MLAs.

"I wish to warn chief minister Prithviraj Chavan that the common man has the power to overthrow the government," Uddhav, who last month met the CM to express opposition to the project, said.

The Jaitapur project is the first to be signed after India and the US clinched the civilian nuclear co-operation deal which allowed India access to the global nuclear market.

The rally against the proposed 9,900 MW nuclear power project at Mithgavhane village in Ratnagiri district saw banners and posters put up by the party, against the project.
