Sena, MNS won’t join Sept. 20 stir
Mumbaikars can heave a sigh of relief as neither of the Senas — Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena — are going to participate in the Bharat bandh on September 20. Both parties have cited Ganeshotsav as the reason to stay out of the bandh called by the Opposition parties to protest the hike in diesel and LPG prices.
“Ganeshostav is a major Hindu festival and is celebrated in the biggest possible way in Maharashtra. The Shiv Sena doesn’t want to cause any hindrance in the celebrations,” said Shiv Sena executive president Udhhav Thackeray.
He added that he had spoken to BJP leader Gopinath Munde who also agreed to the fact that there was no point in disturbing the festive mood in the state.
MNS leader Raj Thackeray also issued a statement on Sunday evening announcing his decision not to participate in the bandh.
Moreover, Maharashtra BJP president Sudhir Mungatiwar said that although the bandh will be observed as per schedule, considering the Ganeshostav that begins from Wednesday onwards, all public transports, buses, trains, autos and taxis are kept out of the bandh.
“Commuters won’t be affected. People from Konkan are keen to visit their hometowns. Hence, public transport and essential services will be kept out of the bandh,” Mr Mungatiwar said.
The Shiv Sena and MNS have earned the reputation of being strong political parties whose call for bandh has never flopped. The ruling parties have taken the Sena seriously whenever it has called for a bandh.
