Sena stir on Belgaum disrupts RS
The Belgaum dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka again rocked the Rajya Sabha, which witnessed an adjournment, few minutes after it had assembled on Wednesday.
Demanding a discussion on the issue, Shiv Sena members created a ruckus after Chairman Hamid Ansari rejected their demand of immediate discussion on the issue.
The chair stated that the matter was sub-judice and could not be taken up in the House.
At this, Shiv Sena members, led by Manohar Joshi, gathered near Dr Ansari’s podium. Despite repeated requests, they stood firm on the demand for the discussion, forcing the chair to adjourn the House for half-an-hour till 11.30 am.
The Maharashtra-Karnataka boundary row came to the limelight following the Central government’s affidavit in the Supreme Court early July that the disputed areas could not be made a part of Maharashtra merely because a majority of the population there speak Marathi
When the House reassembled, Mr Joshi, after consulting the issue with other members of his party, said if the matter is taken up through a Calling Attention Motion, his party would have no objection. Dr Ansari then asked him to give a notice for it and took up the listed questions.
