Seven held in Maha addl collector's burning death case
Malegaon, Maharashtra: Seven persons, arrested for burning to death Additional District Collector Yashwant Sonawane in Nashik district, were produced before local court at Manmad today.
The arrested included Popat Dattu Shinde, suspected to be the main culprit, police said, adding they have been remanded in police custody till February 8.
Others nabbed by the police are Shinde's brother-in-law Sitaram Balerao and aide Raju Shirsat. Kacharu Surode, Vikas Shinde, Dipak Borase and Tausif Shaikh Altaf Shaikh have also been apprehended.
Another suspect, Kunal, who is Shinde's son, is absconding, police said.
Shinde and others are accused of pouring kerosene on Sonawane near Panewadi near Manmad and setting him afire. The officer died on the spot.
Shinde has criminal cases lodged against him in 2006 and 2008 and had been externed from the Manmad city limits once.
Sonawane, who was passing by, had seen some people adulterating fuel, and had stopped to question them.
