SGPC general house polls to be Sept. 18
The ministry of home affairs has approved September 18 as the date for holding long overdue elections to the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee’s general house.
According to the chief commissioner gurudwara elections, Justice H.S. Brar, the MHA has been requested to formally notify the polls in the relevant governmental gazettes of Punjab, Haryana, HP and Chandigarh. Popularly described as the “Sikh parliament,” five-yearly elections to the SGPC are conducted under the Sikh Gurudwara Board Election Rules legislated as part of the Sikh Gurudwaras Act 1925. Last held in 2004, fresh elections to the 160-member general house have been delayed by almost two years.
Notification of the gurudwara elections could adversely impact the Punjab government’s plans.
