Shah grilled, back in remand till Aug. 21
The CBI on Sunday grilled former minister of state for home Amit Shah for the second consecutive day after the Gujarat high court accepted the agency’s plea for his two-day remand in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
However, CBI officials claimed the former minister remained non-cooperative and was elusive in replying to the questioned put to him.
Shah has been sent back to judicial custody till August 21. Shah, who was kept in lockup at the CBI office on Saturday night in Gandhinagar, was brought for interrogation at the agency’s camp office in block 11 of old secretariat campus.
On Saturday, Shah was grilled by the CBI for over nine hours, but the minister gave evasive answers, according to sources.
Sources said that Shah was medically examined before and after interrogation by the CBI. During the course of interrogation, Shah’s lawyers were present, but not at audible distance.
The Gujarat high court on August 6, setting aside a lower court order, remanded the former minister of state for home in two-day CBI custody. The CBI had sought Shah’s remand on the ground that he was the “kingpin” of the entire conspiracy leading to the encounter of Sohrabuddin, the killing of his wife Kauser Bi and also Tulsi Prajapati, a key witness.
Meanwhile, with his two-day CBI custody getting over on Sunday, Shah he has been sent back to judicial custody. Shah was presented before CBI judge A.Y. Dave after his remand period got over and was sent to judicial custody soon after.
Shah has been in jail at Sabarmati central prison ever since he was sent to judicial custody after he surrendered before the CBI on July 25. Previously, he was chargesheeted along with 12 police officials in the fake encounter case. His bail plea is scheduled to come up for hearing on August 11 at a special CBI court in Ahmedabad.
