Shankaran hearing in UK court today
A London court is likely to hear India’s plea seeking extradition of Ravi Shankaran, a key accused in the naval war room leak case, today.
According to sources the CBI, which has gone unrepresented in two hearings, had sought assistance of the Crown Prosecutor Services now to represent the case in the British court for his extradition which was necessary for the naval war room leak case to unravel the missing links.
A key accused in the naval war room leak case, Shankaran, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police in London on April 21 following which the CBI, which is the Interpol in India and the agency investigating the case, was informed.
The British court, where the hearing is going on, recently asked the government of India to explain the delay in the extradition request for Shankaran made by the investigating agency. However, CBI made it clear that there was no delay in making Shankaran’s extradition request at all, sources said. His trial will be held in the London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court where India’s extradition request listing his alleged role in the crime would be heard, sources said.
“After registering the case on March 20, 2006, the CBI sent a formal extradition request for Ravi Shankaran to MEA on April 13, 2007, which in-turn was forwarded to the Indian High Commission in London on May 9, 2007. There was no delay. The agency can not make extradition request for a suspect immediately after registering the case. There are legal formalities that have to be fulfilled before making a request for extradition”, sources said.
