Sharad Pawar quits as head of Telecom EGom
Apprehending the possibility of fresh bids to drag his name into the spectrum allocation scam, NCP chief and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Monday recused himself from heading the empowered group of ministers (EGoM) on telecom.
He took the responsibility just three days ago to replace Mr Pranab Mukherjee, who had resigned to contest the Presidential election.
Mr Pawar, who was scheduled to chair the first meeting of the reconstituted EGoM on Monday, first postponed the meeting and then wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recalling how attempts were made to drag him into the controversy and that it would be appropriate to recuse himself from heading the panel.
Later in the day, Mr Pawar, in a statement, said, “The Prime Minister has agreed to relieve me from the responsibility.”
