Shayan Munshi faces perjury trial for Jessica case U-turn
Model and Bollywood actor Shayan Munshi and another witness in the Jessica Lall murder case face prosecution on charges of perjury for turning hostile while deposing in the trial court, the Delhi high court ruled Wednesday.
The other witness who faces a perjury trial under Section 340 of the Criminal Procedure Code is ballistics expert Prem Sagar Manocha.
The two face a jail sentence up to seven years if found guilty.
The prosecution had wanted 19 witnesses to be tried for perjury, but the high court absolved 17 others on charges of giving false evidence in their trial deposition, while directing the registrar-general to file a complaint against Mr Munshi and Mr Manocha before the trial court.
Shayan Munshi, who was present at the 1999 Jessica Lall shooting incident, was the complainant in the case and got the FIR lodged.
But in court he had disowned his complaint and turned hostile.
A bench of Justices S. Ravindra Bhat and G.P. Mittal, in its ruling, also referred the issue of witness protection to the Chief Justice, to be treated as a PIL.
