Shutdown call by traders affects life in Srinagar

A complete shutdown called by traders and transporters on Friday affected normal life in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital and other parts of the valley.

Shops and other business establishments remained closed here following the shutdown call against the killing of a local youth in north Kashmir's Baramulla district Monday. Public transport went off the roads.

Eighteen-year-old student Altaf Ahmad was killed when Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) guards outside an NHPC hydel power plant opened fire on protesters in Boniyar town Monday.

Skeletal private transport, however, plied on the roads Friday. Some shops functioned normally on the city outskirts and three-wheelers ferried commuters in many parts of the city.

Reports from Ganderbal, Baramulla, Anantnag, Badgam, Shopian, Kulgam, Bandipora and Kupwara district headquarters indicated the shutdown affected normal life in these towns as well.
