Sibal: Can achieve 100% literacy in next 10 years
Union human resources development minister Kapil Sibal on Friday stated that the country could attain total literacy in the next 10 years as the literacy level in the country had reached 74 per cent as per the provisional 2011 Census.
“Many experts had stated that literacy rate will be 72 per cent in 2015. We have proved the world wrong by achieving 74.4 per cent literacy,” he said.
He stated that the Census figures had shown that India would be able to achieve education for all in the age group of 6-14 by 2015 and “I am confident that if we progress at this pace India will have total literacy in the next 10 years”. However, he expressed concern about eight million children who are still out of school. “A lot of effort is needed in this regard to reduce the number,” he stated.
Mr Sibal’s comments came after he released a report on the completion of first year of Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act. He stated that the country had silenced critics including international organisations who said India will not achieve its millennium development goals.
Mr Sibal stated that during the last one year, after the implementation of the RTE Act, 15 states have notified state rules while notification of academic authority has been done by 20 states.
